How does wort clarity improve fermentation?
Q. I have recently heard that a properly clear wort improves yeast activity but how and why? Has any one else heard this? The info was a bit technical but I got it.

A. I will send you the entire report and others for your reference. Origin and Control of Particles in the Brewing Process Non-Microbiological Particles are produced and removed at five stages of the brewing process. An understanding of how these stages affect particle formation and removal will allow the brewer to more easily control the process to achieve a consistent and optimum level of beer particles, leading to a more consistent and efficient clarification process whether the end product is cask or brewery conditioned. 1. Mashing - Milling of grist materials results in the generation of numerous fine dusty starch and husk particles. These are usually removed during mash separation. How long does it take for St Johns Wort to go out of my system?
Q. Ive been taking St Johns wort but haven't taken it for the past 2 days. I was prescribed Imagrin Nasal Sprays which I cannot take at the same time as St Johns Wort. Would I b ok to take the nasal spray now or shud i wait longer?

A. You should be ok to use the nasal spray now. By not taking it at the same time would just mean that the spray wouldn't work as effectively. It won't cause you any harm.

A. I advise you to go and see a naturapath. I'd like to mention about ten different types of natural remedies but am not qualified to do so. Maybe also visit your GP for a referral to a specialist to diagnose possible depression. This just to get a sense of direction on where you need to be at.

How can I come off Kira St Johns Wort when all I can find is the one a day tablets?
Q. I have been taking St Johns Wort for about 9 months now and now feel that I want to come off it. I do not want to just stop taking it but I can not find anything else in the Kira St Johns Wort range. I am sure they used to do 3 a day ones which were individually a lower dose? I do not wish to switch brands at this stage or take one every other day I just want to gradually cut down now. Anyone got experience of this? Serious answers only please.

A. A lot of the St John Wort on the market is actually ineffective because there is not enough of its active ingredient Hypercium to have an effect. However whether you are reacting to the tablets or the placebo effect you would still need to reduce your dosage gradually as the withdrawal effects could still be the same. Although you stated that you don't want to take them every other day this is what I would actually recommend. When I stopped taking St Johns Wort I noticed that even if you stop cold turkey the effects take a long time to wear off. For this reason taking them every other day should ease coming off of them without any instant negative effects. In addition I would recommend the following as more effective long term strategies… [cont.]

When making my wort for my beer, I put too much water in the wort. What will be the outcome?
Q. I am making 5 gallons of beer. I was supposed to put 2.5 gallons of water into creating the wort. I measured wrong and put 3.2 gallons of water in the wort.. I ended up with 5 gallons of beer in the end, but what will be the result of this?? In the end the water amount is the same, it's just the wort seems like it may have been a little watered down.. Any input??

A. You should be absolutely fine if you ended up with 5 gallons of beer. Depending on your recipe, you may have ended up extracting more hops than the recipe designer (you?) planned on, but it shouldn't make a huge difference. You may also end up with a lighter color than planned on, but, again, not the end of the world. The higher the gravity of your boil, the lower your hop extraction. Boiling a smaller portion of the wort, means that you end up getting less hop bittering than a higher-volume boil. If you are brewing your beer from a kit, a good kit designer (recipe maker) takes this into consideration and increases the hops to make up for this. So, if your kit called for an exact volume of 2.5 gallons, you will end up with a slightly… [cont.]

What do I do if after 24 hours my homebrew beer wort is not bubbling or foaming?
Q. Is there any way to be sure if the yeast is alive or dead? The only thing that I can think of that I might of done is to add the yeast into warm water about 1.5 hours before I added it to the wort. Can I warm up some more yeast and try again?
Asked by Brad S - Sun Jan 28 19:21:12 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What was the temperature when you pitched the yeast? If it was too hot, it could have killed the yeast. Do you have a hydrometer? What's the SG? I'd let it sit a few more days and keep an eye on it. Fermentation activity will slow after a while. Give it time.

The bump or mole or wart is flat at it's top.raised about 1/4 inch and on his spine between his shoulder blades. he seems to be pretty itchy (no Fleas) The vet wants to charge 300.00 to 600.00 to remove it. Should i get a 2nd opinion? They hav'nt done any test yet. What do you recommend?

A. how old is your dog? a young dog may indeed have a wart which are not often problematic and generally can just be brought to the attention of your veterinarian. In older dogs wart-like growths develop as dogs age and are usually benign skin tumors that can be completely excised and therein cured (i.e. won't grow back in that spot). While you're deciding what the growth is, and what you want to do about it, at the very least measure it and note the size on the calendar and look for any other growths of the same type.

is it safe to drink tea with St Johns wort?
Q. I bought a bedtime tea and it has St Johns wort in it, I wish I noticed it before because now I am hesitant to drink it. Any suggestions?
Asked by Torn - Wed Sep 9 14:47:58 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That all depends. St. Johns Wort interacts with quite a few medicines and it is not really meant as a sleep aid. However, this tea may not have much real St. Johns Wort in it, so it is hard to give you an answer without seeing the tea that you are talking about and reading the ingredient list. I would suggest speaking with a qualified naturopath or herbalist who knows your health history and any medications that you are taking to find the answer to your question.

Q. I've just started taking it to help with stress and my mood. My life is quite unsettling at the moment and I'm finding that I feel quite panicky alot of the time and I get grumpy really easily. How long do I have to take it to start feeling better and are there any better solutions?

A. An herbal pill has no guarantees to work at all. None of that is regulated or tested by the FDA and thus...limited evidence they do anything. You could also try exercise, music, anything that you enjoy doing. Exercise is one of the best things you can do to relieve stress. Also, make sure you get enough sleep.

A. the best natural depression remedy I ever used was SAM-e. Its used to improve mood and joint pain. I have bad arthritis in my ankle from a bad break years ago as well as depression so I tried it for a few months. My mood was better than any prescription anti-depressant I'd used, everything literally seemed brighter. Unfortunately its expensive, about $30 for a month's supply. I had to go back on prescriptions mostly because of cost.

Have you tried an herbal antidepresant like St. Johns' Wort and how did it work for you?
Q. Or some other OTC health store type that worked for you. I know some of you are going to say go to the Dr., etc but this man is jobless and falling through the cracks in the system.
Asked by Over The Rainbow - Thu Apr 24 01:56:36 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First it is essential to confirm the person has depression before some lay person starts treating him for "depression". Second, yes, St John's Wart has some mild anti-depressant effects and can be used in mild depression. The problem with all herbal products is the high variability of active ingredient from one plant to the next, one farmer to the next, and that nobody really knows for sure what the active ingredient is.

A. Are you sure that your infections are coming during the cooling phase? Have you sanitized all your equipment? Even when I had no wort chiller, I had no difficulty with infection. Now that I do, I can chill my wort to pitching temperature in a matter of minutes. To summarize, the three best ways to prevent infection are: sanitize, sanitize, and sanitize.

A. It will not matter much. You want to actually remove the hops after you are done boiling. However it is your brew, brew it like you want. I have left them in and ended up with a slightly more bitter beer (something I like, my wife does not). So mostly it is a matter of preference. I also brew in an aluminum cook pot. I would not like to add aluminum scrapings to my beer. Then again you should not be using a metal or wooden spoon anyway. Brewing is as much about discovery as anything else. Try it and see. As for what it looks like I highly suggest anyone who drinks alcohol to see what it looks like in a fermentor. I personally think we are too disconnected from the food we eat. After all you are rotting grain (in a controlled way) [cont.]

How long after a person starts taking St. John's Wort does it start to help with their depression?
Q. (That is, of course, presuming that it will work.)
