A. Hi.,, im having the same problem finding out the answer to this. My doctor said that i could take them in my 7 days free from taking the pill, but even with his advice (and he is a very good doctor) i still don't know if i would risk it, and like someone else has answered surely we would have to take St Johns Wort everyday for it to work effectively as with any vitamins. So for now im not going to take St Johns Wort until i can find out alittle more about it, i wouldn't want to risk falling pregnent again, im 36 and have two wonderful children don't think i cope with having any more. good luck in finding out your anwer to this :o)

A. A day or two would be long enought, I would have thought. But why do you want to take anti-depressants instead of St. John's wort? All the evidence says that they are both as good as each other - St. John's wort is just as effective as conventional drugs, such as tricyclic and the newer SSRI anti-dpressants such as Prozac. All of them - including St. John's wort will take 2 - 4 weeks to kick in, and probably 6 weeks or longer in some cases. But, St.John's wort is far safer, has less side-effects and less long-term effects such as dependency. Of course, I am biased, having practiced Complementary and Alternative Medicine, including herbal medicine, for over 12 years. Before this I was a GP. At the end of the day the choice is… [cont.]

Q. my mum was asked to take high potency st johns wort whow many milligrams is this? also how much is an overdose?
Asked by irockheaps - Mon Oct 26 06:59:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A common dose of St. John's Wort is 375 mg, but an extract of St. John's Wort (often standardized to 0.3% hypericin or more) would be a higher potency. But Jennifer is right... your best bet would be to have your mom check with the people that told her to take the St. John's Wort. That doctor would also be able to tell her how much would be an overdose for her (as everyone is different... some people need just 1 dose, some people can handle 3-4 doses per day). I wouldn't recommend that she take more than the bottle recommends if you buy one in a store unless the doctor says otherwise, though. Good luck and I hope I helped!

A. 3 first day, as shown below. It shouldn't be relied on as a sole treatment for depression, or anxiety. Ask yourself: "Why do I feel depressed, and when did I first start to feel this way: can I associate this with any recent change in my life?" (if so, it is probably situational depression: counselling, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is indicated). Or, was it a more gradual thing, with no apparent cause? (a nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, environmental toxicity, or reactions to some medications, etc., becomes more likely as the cause). Antidepressants work quicker than the following; 2 - 6 weeks, but you may have to adjust dosage, or types, whereas St. John's wort is effective for most people, tolerance doesn't develop, and… [cont.]

Does St Johns Wort actually work for anxiety and depression?
Q. I used to take Paxil two years ago but stopped it within about 8 months of use despite being told it was a good idea to continue by the psychiatrist. But I went to see my GP a few days ago with another problem. I ended up telling him my issue with Paxil and he said I can try St Johns Wort if I would like to try anything herbal... I thought it was a bit strange for a doctor to suggest anything herbal but just want to know if it really works... I stopped taking Paxil a very long time ago. It made me feel emotionally numb... really did not like it...

A. St. John's Wort has some mild anti-depressant effects. Mild being the key word here. It was only somewhat effective in MILD cases of depression. The GP probably mentioned this since you were complaining about Paxil, which as far as anti-dpressants go, is pretty mild in the 'emotionally numbing' effect. I'm on Paxil as well and this emotional numbness is disconcerting sometimes, but there isn't really an alternative that works as well as it does for me. I've tried Zoloft (same effect, but stopped working after several years), and a few others (Wellbutrin and Effextor kept me from sleeping, probably because of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibition... or so I guess). St. John's Wort will probably do the same thing, but the problem is that… [cont.]

A. St. John's Wort does help some people with depression; I'm not sure if it will make you gain weight, but it ultimately depends on the person. No other herbal remedies come to mind, but there are probably some out there. If you're looking for natural remedies in general, vitamin B-complex supplements and/or omega-3 fatty acid supplements also help some people. Have you considered therapy? It can help a great deal in depression, as the therapist can teach you ways to help yourself get well on your own. If you decide to take this route, you may need an official diagnosis from psychiatrist; please note that you DO NOT need to take medication if you don't want to. Also, have you had any medical diagnostic tests done? There is the possibility… [cont.]

A. it works because there is a phytoneutrient in there... a chemical (grown in nature) called a Xanthone. There are are around 200 of them in nature. Each of them are unique and are specific to a certain health function. unfortuneately, only several plants that contain xanthones are actually consumable. (many plants have xanthones but are located in roots or the bark, which are not consumable). St. John's Wort is one plant that actually contains one of these xanthones. That Xanthone from SJW is one that is targeted toward chemical imbalance that is in the head, which is also the same targeting by anti depressants. Why on earth would St.Johns Wort and Gingko be illegal in Ireland?
Q. I ive in Ireland and I was thinking of buying Gingko but was told it's illegal and has been for about 3 or 4 years under new laws?!!! So too is St.Johns Wort and it seems some other natural pills. Yet, they are legal in the US, UK etc... @ Oldtimekid2: I phoned a few stores today asking about it, whether they have it and how much, and was told repeatedly that they are banned from stocking it because of Irish law. A. Unfortunately, there are more times than I would care to admit that some higher-up official(s) read something or hear something that is either off-base or completely false and they run with it. Sometimes it's because one of their constituents brings it to their attention, sometimes it's the "common people" that they represent, and sometimes it's their own personal reading. Either way, they may restrict or ban a perfectly safe and natural product based on that and it does upset a lot of people. It's happened with hundreds of things in California, dozens of things in Canada, and a smaller number of items in many other countries and areas. The best thing you can do is to contact your local governmental officials (mayor, town counsel, etc),… [cont.]

A. Effexor has quite a few side effects, and stopping it is not necessarily a bad thing. St. John's Wort, though is a slippery idea. For one, in the US, we have no "standardization" of herbal products that require the product you buy to be matched to those used in studies. For instance, if you read a successful study that shows St. John's Wort actually working. It may indicate that there is a certain milligram used in conjunction with another herb, a certain base, and maybe drank with chamomile tea. What you might buy can be very different, because we just don't regulate the products in that manner here in the US. If you do try it, you can try as early as a week or two after going off the effexor, and you need to find a brand that is at… [cont.]

The company I buy my supplements from has one formula with both combined. It works very well. The is another suggestion though, that seem to work for mood. Include banana in your diet.

Asked by Over The Rainbow - Thu Apr 24 01:56:36 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First it is essential to confirm the person has depression before some lay person starts treating him for "depression". Second, yes, St John's Wart has some mild anti-depressant effects and can be used in mild depression. The problem with all herbal products is the high variability of active ingredient from one plant to the next, one farmer to the next, and that nobody really knows for sure what the active ingredient is.
