How long does it take for St Johns Wort to go out of my system?
Q. Ive been taking St Johns wort but haven't taken it for the past 2 days. I was prescribed Imagrin Nasal Sprays which I cannot take at the same time as St Johns Wort. Would I b ok to take the nasal spray now or shud i wait longer?

A. You should be ok to use the nasal spray now. By not taking it at the same time would just mean that the spray wouldn't work as effectively. It won't cause you any harm.

Can you buy St Johns Wort Tablets in pharmecies?
Q. are they available in pharmecies? if so can you buy it without a prescription? also, is st johns wort really honestly effective for depression? i mean, if st johns wort really was such a miracle herbal/natural alternative for anti depressents, why arent doctors prescribing them instead of chemical inducing drugs?

Does St Johns Wort actually work for anxiety and depression?
Q. I used to take Paxil two years ago but stopped it within about 8 months of use despite being told it was a good idea to continue by the psychiatrist. But I went to see my GP a few days ago with another problem. I ended up telling him my issue with Paxil and he said I can try St Johns Wort if I would like to try anything herbal... I thought it was a bit strange for a doctor to suggest anything herbal but just want to know if it really works... I stopped taking Paxil a very long time ago. It made me feel emotionally numb... really did not like it...

A. St. John's Wort has some mild anti-depressant effects. Mild being the key word here. It was only somewhat effective in MILD cases of depression. The GP probably mentioned this since you were complaining about Paxil, which as far as anti-dpressants go, is pretty mild in the 'emotionally numbing' effect. I'm on Paxil as well and this emotional numbness is disconcerting sometimes, but there isn't really an alternative that works as well as it does for me. I've tried Zoloft (same effect, but stopped working after several years), and a few others (Wellbutrin and Effextor kept me from sleeping, probably because of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibition... or so I guess). St. John's Wort will probably do the same thing, but the problem is that… [cont.]

Q. I was wondering if taking st johns wort. 2 capsules a day will be ok to take with the rescue pastilles i believe made by bachs. Im takin the st johns wort for a while and am still getting anxiety and stuff. So can i take rescue pastilles with my st johns wort. Like as many as i need. I figure there both natural. No matter what flavor

A. Don't take the advice of people on an internet forum for something medical like this! Consult a real doctor. You must understand that something 'Natural' is still made of chemicals. It only works if it has active ingredients in it which are the same as those in normal medicines. St. John's Wort acts on the liver to reduce the blood levels of many, many prescription drugs. People may believe it to be a safe and gentle herb, but they are unaware that it is reducing the effectiveness of other medications that they are taking. Talk to your doctor before taking it.

A. St. John's Wort does help some people with depression; I'm not sure if it will make you gain weight, but it ultimately depends on the person. No other herbal remedies come to mind, but there are probably some out there. If you're looking for natural remedies in general, vitamin B-complex supplements and/or omega-3 fatty acid supplements also help some people. Have you considered therapy? It can help a great deal in depression, as the therapist can teach you ways to help yourself get well on your own. If you decide to take this route, you may need an official diagnosis from psychiatrist; please note that you DO NOT need to take medication if you don't want to. Also, have you had any medical diagnostic tests done? There is the possibility… [cont.]

A. YES!!! I had to quit taking St. John's Wart when I was on BC. I changed to 5-HTP. It's a little more expensive, but it worked good for me. Just make sure that it doesn't have anything else like Valarian with it, or it might make you a bit tired. I've also heard SAM-e is good too.

Q. I am getting really nervous and anxious and need a job asap, so I have to nail the interview, apart from reading up about the company etc , will st johns wort help my confidence or do you know anything better that will kick in by tomorrow, legal stuff only lol.

A. No. Taking herbs can have unusual side effects. You don't want that. It is better to be nervous. Being nervous is actually good. It shows that you care about the job. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be nervous. Tell the interviewer that you feel nervous but that you know you can do a great job. She will be glad that you admitted that you are nervous rather than trying to cover it up..

A. Most people will start to see some results within 2-3 weeks. However, it depends on your age, diet, health status, stress levels, severity of your problem, body chemistry, and many other factors. Some people might see some results sooner, while others will need more time to see results. Herbal supplements have an 85% effective rate.

A. St John s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a popular unlicensed herbal remedy for treating mild depression. However, preparations of St John s wort can induce drug metabolising enzymes and a number of important interactions with conventional drugs have been identified, see Appendix 1 (St John s wort). The amount of active ingredient can vary between different preparations of St John s wort and switching from one to another can change the degree of enzyme induction. Furthermore, when a patient stops taking St John s wort, concentrations of interacting drugs may increase, leading to toxicity. Antidepressants should not be used with St John s wort because of the potential for interaction. fluoxetine (ssri) - increased serotonergic effects… [cont.]

Why on earth would St.Johns Wort and Gingko be illegal in Ireland?
Q. I ive in Ireland and I was thinking of buying Gingko but was told it's illegal and has been for about 3 or 4 years under new laws?!!! So too is St.Johns Wort and it seems some other natural pills. Yet, they are legal in the US, UK etc... @ Oldtimekid2: I phoned a few stores today asking about it, whether they have it and how much, and was told repeatedly that they are banned from stocking it because of Irish law. A. Unfortunately, there are more times than I would care to admit that some higher-up official(s) read something or hear something that is either off-base or completely false and they run with it. Sometimes it's because one of their constituents brings it to their attention, sometimes it's the "common people" that they represent, and sometimes it's their own personal reading. Either way, they may restrict or ban a perfectly safe and natural product based on that and it does upset a lot of people. It's happened with hundreds of things in California, dozens of things in Canada, and a smaller number of items in many other countries and areas. The best thing you can do is to contact your local governmental officials (mayor, town counsel, etc),… [cont.]

Can I increase my dosage of St Johns Wort?
Q. I am currently taking 2 x St Johns Wort tablets a day which is the recommended dosage on the bottle. They are 334mg Standardised extract and provide 1 mg Hypercin. What harm would it do to increase the dosage to 3 or even 4 tablets a day. Would I be doing myself any harm and would it help my moods better.

A. if you are taking these for depression have a look at PROXAN - this makes the brain create its own serotonin again (the happy chemical) whereas antidepressants put artifical serotonin in your brain... St Johns wart is very mild, if you dont have the desired effects I would have a chat to your doctor or psych and check this out! also EPA in omegas is great for the functioning of the brain, cheack out vegepa.com

A. IN natural medicine, there is often a worstening before there is an improvement (agree with Herring's law). However, with a person's mood I would never take chances (legally or ethically). if you are getting worse then it is time to implement another strategy. St Johns can take 4 weeks before it kicks in, so in the meantime, you could try SAMe which onyl takes 24-72 hours and has many antidepressant qualities. Most health shops will sell this. Please make sure if you take either of these you are not on prescription anti-depressants. If things really do get worse please speak to a professional, either gp or a naturopath. Good luck, god bless. Remeber to look at your diet! You cant do this with pills alone. Please email me if you need… [cont.]

A. A lot of people here in Ireland find it very good. At one time you could have got it over the counter without a doctor's prescription but now you can't get it like that anymore. I wanted to try it out but was told I would have to have a doctor's prescription. So I went to the doctor's but he prescribe a different tablet to me.

Has anyone used St Johns wort for mild/moderate depression? If so how long did it take to work?
Q. I have recently started taking St Johns Wort for mile to moderate depression. I am taking 1 x 1000mg (300mg hypericum Perforatum, 900mcg Hypericin) daily. How long should it take to notice a difference? And is this an ok dosage? The bottle says take 2 - 3 daily, however I have read and been told to take one a day??

A. I used it for PMS/depression, I took one with each meal (3 a day) and saw results in 2 weeks, after a month I lowered the dose to two a day. A fantastic herb, I felt happy, I could sleep, no water retention or cravings, weight loss - just make sure you buy a good brand and do what it says on the label. I personally tried the FSC brand. Good luck!
