A. While dmoz has historically been a showcat directory placement - the work involved has largely outweighed the benefit for some time. You will typically wait an excessively long time to see if you've been accepted with no accountability if you haven't. For my sites and my client's sites, we've found better benefit working through other directories.

Does the "Open Directory Project" have anything to do with search engine rank, like google rank?
Q. Hi im making my own website, but i want to know if i can make it visible without paying money. Does the open directory project site... have anything to do with getting my site on a web browser? If anyone can help that would be great thanks
Asked by Sarah W - Sat Apr 7 16:27:04 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. By submitting your web site to dmoz and being accepted in the open directory, your site will be listed in a good number of directories. And that's a very good thing. You can have your web site spidered by Google, Yahoo, MSN and others by submitting your site to them. Search engine rank is more a function of two things. First, build your pages using good keywords (hope you understand that phrase) and with original, quality content. Secondly, writing articles is considered the very best way to get targeted traffic to your site. The good news is that it's free. To learn more visit You'll find articles you can use on your site and you'll discover articles that will explain exactly how to write articles. All the best with your web… [cont.]

How is the Open Directory Project (dmoz.org) being used today?
Q. The ODP was started back in the late 90s as an alternative to the Yahoo! directory. A distributed group of volunteer editors manually categorize Web sites and maintain an ontology. The data is available for browsing using a category tree at DMOZ.org. A file containing all the data is also available. I'm curious how people are using it today. Are you currently using the ODP? Do you use it to find Web sites? Do you submit Web sites? Do you use the RDF file?

A. Hi, I think EcoFirms.org do. It's an Eco Friendly Companies Directory. They don't actually advertise this on their site but I heard that you can volunteer to do editorial work for them.

How can I get my site into DMOZ?
Q. I have been trying to get my site into DMOZ (the Open Directory Project) for a year now. I meticulously followed the guidelines - like George Costanza nervously ordering soup from the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. (I really do respect guidelines, as they always exist for a reason.) I'll admit, I made the mistake of submitting more than once, but I think I left a few months between submissions. I know that there are too many submissions and not enough editors, but... Any suggestions on how to get my site listed on DMOZ, maybe sometime within a few months or so? If it helps any, here is the URL of my website: Thank you for your help.
Asked by Victoria - Sun Nov 29 14:07:30 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. DMOZ is a case of submit and forget. If you submit multiple times your submission will effectively put you back to the bottom of the queue. So as you have already made the mistake once, make sure you don't do it again. Once you have submitted you really have done all you can do. Just move on to the next area of promoting your web site such as other directories, link building, etc. Waiting and worrying about whether or not your site gets DMOZ listed just isn't worth it. I have had sites listed within a week of submission and others that have been waiting for 5 years and still haven`t been listed. Plus the benefits of being listed really arn't that great. There is no magical boost to your search engine rankings, the trickle of traffic… [cont.]

How do I open a word document that has been corrupted ?
Q. My daughters zip drive from school now has a word doc file name as just a square, she needs these files for a final year project, otherwise many hours wasted. Another file is now titled "p Oi ss." Any help would be much appreciated!!! When I go to copy it elsewhere it says cannot - The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable.
Asked by Tony W - Fri Aug 29 04:42:05 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When you say zip drive, do you mean a modern flash / pen drive or the original Zip drive? If it is an old-style Zip drive, unless you can open other files on it alright, you might need to load (or re-load) the drivers on to your system. If it is a modern flash drive, then normally, if a file is corrupted by a Microsoft program error, Word tries to repair it and offers you this version next time you open any Word document (on the same computer). So there might be a chance of finding this if your daughter goes back to the computer she was working on at school. However, if the file has been corrupted by a virus or similar, I'm afraid it might be irretrievable. If your system has first class protection you can try running full scans, but… [cont.]

What open source solution is there for this collabaration project?
Q. I would like to have the following tools available to me and my users: Directory user-submitted Web links Forums online discussions on a variety of topics File repository user-submitted files (If possible, not a requesit: Wiki/Doc editer Collaboratively authored documents) I would like this to be a simple solution and installed on my domain, and it all to be integrated. I had a look at TikiWiki but it seems too much for my needs. The doc collaboartion is not the most important. I was wondering if there is an opensource solution that would meet these needs? Thanks

A. Try Drupal or Joomla. Most of what you mention comes with the default distribution, extra functionality can be installed as modules, generally very easy to do.

Is there a public place where I can find out the opening times of all bars?
Q. I'm wanting to find out the opening times of bars to be able to compare them for a project I'm working on. I've searched through lots of directories and none of them feature opening times for every bar, it's very hit and miss. Does anyone know if local councils keep records that the public can view? Or is there a website with every local bar listed? I'm also interested in bars, restaurants and clubs. If anybody could help I would really appreciate it!
Asked by unknown - Tue Oct 13 15:08:28 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The local council will have records of any license applied for but that would not show the open/close times. as many bars and clubs would have a licence to open say until 2am any day but just open late at the weekends or if there was a function on. The web sites that list bars and clubs cannot be relied upon as accurate sources as the bar /club owners do not update the info. Are the bars/ clubs in a set town or UK wide add additional details if you want will try to help

What should I do for example if i want to use a thermistor...a..photodiod e...or any other type of sensor..that WILL send signals BACK to my computer to my program? do i need an external 5V source for sending high and low signals? or does the pins itself does that?im kinda confused. A. Inp32(short PortAddress); reads the 8 data pins. You'll have to and with the bit you want to test to see if that bit is high or low. Pull the pin up (to 5 volts) through a 1k resistor. Use your sensor to pull it down.

Asked by ToXiCaTiNg - Wed Dec 30 10:22:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hi, Graphics.h is not a part of C++ standard library. It came out as a separate package with Turbo C++. If you are using Turbo C++, then make sure either you have set the correct path in the environment variables options or else compiler won't be able to find it. Or is that header file is in the current directory ? then use "graphics.h". However, these are ancient tools, if you want to learn graphics with c++, go for openGL or if you want to design good user interfaces etc. then learn Microsoft Foundation Classes, Windows Forms or Windows Presentation Foundation. Graphics.h is a sort of legacy software now. Varun
