How to properly ask for a donation ?
Q. I am thinking about calling Wal-mart for a donation for an Expo. Does anyone know whether I should call the local store or their toll-free number ? Also, how to properly ask for a donation ? Thanks !

A. Most stores have a manager or corporate office that handles what is called Community Programs or Charitable Giving/Non-profit Charities. If you have a business or a non-profit organizations, you can contact the company who you are seeking funds from and find out how to best send a request for the funds. Usually they will tell you to fax or mail a letter of request to the person that handles this. This is not an overnight process. I have worked for non-profit orgs. that do this, and there is a certain, professional way that you go about requesting funds. You can't just walk into a store or corporation and expect for them to cut a check made payable to you, they have to account for any charitable giving they do through their accounting… [cont.]

How can you tell if your donation tax receipts are worth claiming?
Q. How can you tell if you should carry-over the donation receipts or use them for this year when filing taxes? I have $300 in tax receipts from 2006 to present but not sure if I should keep them until next year or just claim them?

A. You've posted this in Taxes > Canada. Here's the Canadian answer. On a tax return for a given year, you can used donation receipts issued for the current year, and any of the previous five years, as long as the receipt is not used twice. In this case, you can use anything going back to 2004. In answer to your question, it really depends on whether you would need them. If your income is low this year, like under the basic exemption, using the donation receipts would be a wasted credit. Just work out the income tax with and without the receipts and see the result. At maximum, you should see a $59 reduction in the Net Federal tax, and a lesser amount on the provincial side. Plus, you have the option of using just some of the receipts and… [cont.]

A. They're subject to the same restrictions as cash donations, depending on the market value of the service.
