GNU Free Documentation License How did Britain contribute to the start of World War I? Q. We're having a debate in History tomorrow with each group assigned a country to blame for the war. (Yes, we know it was everyone's fault collectively, it's school.) My team has Britain. So far we have a basic outline, but it's difficult to elaborate on the argument--all I have is that Britain was forcing other countries to compete with it economically and had a lot of colonies. Britain wanted to avoid getting involved in a European war but it had signed a treaty that obliged it to defend Belgian neutrality. The British government therefore had limited choices once the Germans had invaded Belgium so they sent an ultimatum to Berlin demanding that the Germans withdraw their troops otherwise it would be regarded as an act of war. If it weren't for the treaty Britain might still have gone to war in order to prevent Germany conquering France and gaining control of the Channel ports. That would have posed a threat to the power of the Royal Navy and it is unlikely that the British government would have allowed that to happen. England defeated Napoleon in 1815, and after the Congress of Vienna, Europe took a turn to the more conservative, trying to reestablish monarchies in countries that Napoleon had taken over. (and, btw, Latin America countries became independent from Spain during this period too) But, throughout the 1800's, the rise of Industrialism, and urban problems, and the need to educate the masses. Also, commoners demanded more power in party politics.(before, only rich, landed people could participate). Gradually, the British Parliament expanded public education, and voting rights to nearly Universal Manhood Suffrage. The Hawker "Hurricane", and early models of the Supermarine "Spitfire", were armed with eight Browning .303 inch machine guns, four in each wing. Each machine gun fired 1200 rounds per minute. Later Spitfires had just four of these machine guns, plus two 20 millimetre Hispano-Suiza cannon each firing 600 rounds per minute. But at 1/4 lb., one of these big cannon shells weighed ten times as much as a machine gun bullet. Most of the Messerschmitt Me 109-E planes of this time had two 7.92 millimetre (.311 inch) machine guns, and two 20 millimetre cannon firing 520 rounds per minute.
