Why is beer and alcohol so important in peoples life?
Q. A lot of people drink beer everyday. When people want beer they demand it. If theres no beer they will go crazy. Why people think it makes such a difference in what beer they get. It all taste nasty. How could some people like the taste? What is your favorite thing about beer? Why should it be such a huge part of society. People get killed from drunk driving?

A. Beer is important in different people's lives for different reasons. Me? Two reasons... 1) it pays the bills; 2) there is nothing better than enjoying the perfect glass of good beer. Many specific beers are overrated (Bud, Miller Lite, Heineken, Stella, Corona, etc.) but beer as a whole is not overrated at all. Rather, beer is often mistakenly looked down upon as the drink of peasants, when it actually was the drink of many kings as well! People who are desperate for it don't know how to enjoy it. People who are desperate for anything don't know how to enjoy those things. I think this is yet another broad generalization. It is important to me because I love beer. I love a great session IPA with friends, an Oktoberfest at a pig roast, a… [cont.]

What is a unique beer to bring to a beer-tasting party?
Q. I have been inivited to a beer-tasting party and everyone is supposed to bring a unique beer for everyone to sample. I would appreciate some suggestions for a beer that would be different yet enjoyable for everyone to try. Men's Health rated 'Saison Dupont' the 'Best Beer in the World' but I am hoping that someone can confirm this if they have tried it. Thanks!
Asked by Matt - Thu Dec 6 10:55:44 2007 - - 18 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Firstly, homebrew is the most unique of any beer available. That being said, and you're probably not a homebrewer, I would go with something that either you like personally, or that you don't think anyone else at the party will be bringing. Sam Adams seasonals are always a nice change of pace. Their Winter Lager is out right now, and it is quite good, so is their Honey Porter. Or try a local micro-brew. The problem with getting into any critic's 'best beer in the world', is that some of those brews can get quite expensive. It would be one thing for you to buy yourself a bottle or 2 for tasting, but if you are going to a tasting party, that means you need to take enough for at least most of the people there to taste it. I'm not… [cont.]

Where should I put my beer to keep it from getting 'skunked'?
Q. I accidently left a case of beer on my back porch for 24 hours at about 20-30 degrees F. I've read that beer gets skunked by light and not really by warming, although that can hurt the flavor. I want to bring the beer into my dark basement (where I usually keep it) and its about 50 degrees down there but I don't know if that is the best choice. Should I just keep it on the porch and cover it with dark blankets or something? Would the beer already be bad? The beer a porter, it is in brown bottles and still in the box- I"m hoping it got very little light.
Asked by tara g - Sun Jan 21 18:19:21 2007 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Your beer should be just fine, although 20-30F is a little cold. Bringing it in to your basement would actually be perfect. The mid 50's is considered "cellar temperature" and ideal for storing beer. You are also right about light. UV reacts with the alpha acids from the hops and they degrade into compounds that are nearly identical to that which a skunk produces. That's the basis for the brown bottles. In your basement, nice and dark, will be the perfect place for beer.

What beer flavor compares to the finish of Bunnahabhain 1976 Scotch?
Q. I mean mainly the aromatics. Not any exact beer but just the tye/style of beer that might compare.
Asked by BEER CONSORTIUM - Wed Oct 28 20:04:16 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best bet would be a hefeweizen. Since you need a comparison between the finishes of the two, many hefe's carry a phenolic note the result of 4-vinyl guaiacol. But this is a clove flavor and not the banana and ginger notes you get the this Scotch. Therefore, you might chose a wit beer. It has the added spice notes of coriander and orange. [Wait some wheats do have a banana note from (yes, yeast) amyl acetate).] I think it would be interesting to age one of these wheat beers in wood and specifically whisky wood. Does the beer marinate the chicken or in the sauce while simmering?
Q. I want to make oven BBQ Chicken with Beer in the sauce, but I don't know if I am to marinate the quarters in the beer and spices first, or do I just pour it in the sauce when it's simmering??? Can you give me your recipe on how to do this please?
Asked by THEMrsMinLa&Momof2 - Mon May 26 13:18:01 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My advise to you will be to marinate your chicken with beer and spices like a day before you're planning on cooking it. So that way it can absorb the flavors. Then once you're ready to cook your meat you can marinate the chicken with BBQ sauce a little before you are ready to cook it so it can soak on the BBQ flavors also. P.S. Do not over marinate with beer or it might come up with a more sour taste though. But once again that depends on what kind of flavor you're trying to reach. Good luck and save me a plate;)

What are the classifications of beer and how do they taste?
Q. You would think that after 12 years of intense beer drinking that I would "know" the type of beer that I am drinking! To the contrary, I am fairly limited to the likes of bud "light" or "heavy." I have started to enjoy the IPAs and Lagers of the world, but I still don't know the classification of the beer caste system. I read a book on wine, and they laid out simplistic terminology the difference between a "heavy" wine like beourdouex compare to a "light" wine like pinot noir. The best answer would be similar to that wine comparision... Thanks!

A. Two classes of beer collectively make up thousands of different varieties of beer. The two different categories of beer differ in the type of yeast used to brew them and the temperature at which they are brewed. Beer that is classified as lager uses special yeast that ferments best at cooler temperatures. Beer classified as ale uses another type of yeast that ferments best at warmer temperatures. Both lagers and ales contain hops, malted barley, yeast and water. There are basically four types of beer that fall under the lager category: American style pale lager, pilsner, light lager and dark lager. Pale lager usually contains more carbonation than the other types of beer. It tends to be light in colour as well as in body. The most… [cont.]

How can I drink wine or beer without getting hives?
Q. I believe I have recently developed an allergy to wine and beer. Hives form after a glass. I don't drink very often, but do enjoy wine or beer occasionally and would like to still be able to have some. Is there something I can do to prevent the hives, itching, swelling that comes with it? I have been enjoying wine and beer for years, and only just recently started having this problem.
Asked by JENNIFER J - Fri Feb 9 10:43:04 2007 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. That's a tough question. I suffer from allergies myself, and I have reactions to certain red wines-they give me terrible hangovers even if I only drink a glass. I would advise you NOT to take an antihistamine, since it tends to make you drowsy-it will probably intensify the effects of the alcohol. If you really and truly enjoy the taste of wine and beer, then go to an allergist and see if they can run a prick test on you to find out which ones cause you the most problems. I would try white wine, since it has a much lower level of histimines (red wine is high in histamines!) and it might be easier on your system. Another thought: an allergist once told my sister to think of allergy tolerance like a bucket. If you are avoiding… [cont.]

Do beer and soda cans sound different when opened?
Q. I think the "psshht" sound of beer and soda cans sound different from each other. Do you think so too?
Asked by Steven P nb tx - Mon Jul 21 08:40:37 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, they do. The beer can when opened should sound a little flatter than the soda can. The carbonation of the soda would place more inner pressure on the can, causing it to release more rapidly when opened.

A. A bottle of wine is about 9 units and a large beer is about 2(ish) so 4-5 beers. 5% beer is fairly strong so I would go with 4 beers to be on safe side.

A. You're probably allergic to the hops and grains used in the beer. You could try beers that are made using grains different from the beer you've been drinking now.

What was that beer commercial where the bartender claims the bar has over 1000 beers from all over the world?
Q. In the commercial the bar was called "House of Beer" and the bartender had a European accent. After stating what the bar had to offer, she told the man to call her when he had browsed through the list, but he immediately chose the beer he wanted without looking at it. Does anyone have a link to this commercial/remember what beer was being advertised?

A. It was a commercial for Samuel Adams Boston Lager. I don't have a link, but you can often view commercials on their website. If not, look on youtube. Cheers!
