Would anyone else enjoy a category for Antiques/Collectibles?
Q. Most such questions are posted under Society and Culture, but I would love to see them in a category of their own. Then, "Collectibles" would have several headings, for 'sport', 'transportation, 'antiques general', 'maritime', 'military', 'glass', 'coins', etc. I could see a problem with it generating classified ads, but that happens in other categories already. Hint--hint. Y!A staff notices questions with stars..

A. Hi ebay isn't the only source out there...Google Base is great! - Free ads which remain searchable for thirty days, easy photo uploads and results! Yahoo Classifieds are also free. A. Values can be found in books and magazines in your local library. Most are general, while some are more specific. Values can also be found on eBay, etc., and other areas on line. Visit antique shops to see what dealers want to sell their items for. Large flea markets also have good antique dealers. You can sell over the internet, an estate/antique sale, contacting dealers to see if they want to buy, or try craigslist.net.

A. You know what I use - eBay. You can get a real feel of what people are willing to pay on eBay. There you have real people buying real things at prices they are willing to pay and that is what denotes real value - not a book.

How do you value collectibles that were broken by a serviceman?
Q. I can see the values in a book, but now my figurines will have glued heads and glued arms. Is there a percentage of the loss for antique collectibles when they are broken. I Need an approach for insurance reasons for the tradesman's insurance company.

How do I need to find someone to price & sell my valuable Antiques, Glassware and collectibles for me?
Q. I have lots of STUFF I need to get rid of. LOTS of china cups and saucers, glassware, a collection of old tin boxes (tobacco,coffee tins) old perfume bottles, minature ceramic hinged boxes,old blank prestamped postage postcards,(1 cent 3 cent etc.) stamp collection, old milk bottles,old keys, old medicine bottles and tins, old scales, collection of old glass doorknobs, etc. etc. STUFF like that! Is the antiques and collectibles market much worse than it was 30 years ago?
Q. I'm trying to liquidate my parent's estate. They had a Victorian house filled with all kind of antiques and collectibles - Depression and pressed glass, framed artwork, period furniture, etc. I don't want to use EBAY, a lot of the items are too fragile, too large, or too heavy to ship plus the hassle of packaging and shipping. I tried to contact estate liquidators and auctioneers, but nobody is interested unless the items are Sotheby's quality, and who has that laying around? Last autumn I put some stuff out for a yard sale and hardly anyone stopped. One dealer told me I could ask market value for the stuff and keep it or let it go for 10 cents on the dollar and sell it - it would depend on what was more important to me. Now I don't know… [cont.]

A. I think Mid Century Modern is coming back with a flare. Look at any website such as west elm.com or trendy furniture and you see the free form glass, low contemporary style sofa's settes, chairs, beds, lamps, and almost all accessories. It is still considered "retro" and can be found at just about any thrift store for cheap. Its hard to find perfect items, but they are out there!

A. That's a service that is valuable. You can take them to an appraiser or an auction house to get the value. Or, you can do the research yourself. Type each item into a search engine and loook at other sites where the same thing is for sale. Use the Ebay "completed items" function on the left hand side of the page. Jars, bottles and books are cool, but they're not rare so they don't bring in much money. .

A. Antiques Roadshow has an excellent website, plus links to other sites and to their experts. Christie's has good sites, as does Sotheby's. You might also go to eBay, and scope out some items similar to those you want to research. Usually, those offering them have done background work on them, and they may list their sources. When looking at eBay, remember that the information may be correct so far as they KNOW...always verify. Once you have a name of an artist or craftsman, you have a place to start.
