Boats and Birds by Gregory and the Hawk How long will it learn to play on guitar?
Q. I have really no experience in playing guitar, but I want to play the song Boats and Birds by Gregory and the Hawk for my school talent show. I want to know how long it'll take to learn, and if it'll be hard. I don't want to learn how to actually play guitar, just this one song. Or would piano be easier?

Where can someone go to learn about boats?
Q. I have a long term plan to start a company involving boats of all types, and I'm wondering if any boating enthusiasts have a recommendation on how I can get to learn the inner workings of all boats, how to repair them myself, and overall knowledge of the different vessels. The boats would be what I would call pleasurecraft. Basically anything even remotely related to watersports, from ones that pull waterskiiers to catamarans to speed boats and even possibly larger models for cruising.

What is a good theme for a school project involving boats?
Q. My grade is having groups of 3 people build boats out of cardboard and duct tape. I was hoping someone would have a good idea for a theme but it can't be: Titanic, Pirates, or The Little Mermaid. And it has to be easy to recreate from cardboard, markers, and colored duct tape. I'd really appreciate it!

How many people in the US use inflatable boats for fishing?
Q. Looking for the size of the market for an alternative to inflatable boats.
Asked by artchers - Sun Aug 5 14:32:28 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I used to use an inflatable all the time when I first started wade fishing here in Florida. I bought a $30 Wal-Mart dinghy just to carry the cooler, the poles, the tackle box, and whatever else I may need. I waded the dingy to a nearby island and fished from there. It's a great alternative if you're low on cash. I wouldn't suggest doing that anywhere you dont know the terrain so you dont drown, or especially not at night because of the sharks.

What physics topics can be discussed concerning power boats?
Q. I am working on a physics project in which I have to discuss different topics (in physics) that deal with power boats. I can go into detail on the friction of water, velocity, etc., but I was looking for more in-depth details and more interesting concepts. Physics is not my strongest subject, so any intellectual information would be helpful.

What's that place at the lake called where all the boats meet up and party?
Q. Like everyone anchors their boats down and you all just hang out and party on everyone's boat? It's just at regular lakes, there's no decks or anything, it's just a random part of the lake all the boats gather at.

How do I get the super shiny effect on my wood walls that I see on boats?
Q. I plan on staining my wood walls a deep red, I want to know what product I can use to give them a super shiny appearance..Are the wooden walls on some larger boats, veneers? or is it some kind of chemical that make them that shiny and smooth? I don't think it's a clear paint, it almost looks like a resin...anyone know what i'm talking about???
Asked by corkymybottles - Thu May 11 16:54:24 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You were asking about boats, and your answers are house related, so here goes: The super shiny finish you see on boats is marine spar varnish...many many coats...some wood on boats is veneer, most is solid lumber ( my boat is 60 year old teak and mahogany) and the gloss effect is many coats, lightly sanding with 220 or 320 grit paper between coats...polyurethane is NEVER used on a boat because sunlight eats it, turns it yellow, and it falls off before you can say Bob's your uncle...if your walls are away from sunlight ( window/door) then p.u. might work well for a while..otherwise forget it. I don't know about the two part stuff the other answers refer to; there is a two step process for boats called Cetol; first part is a stain/base coat, [cont.]

How much can I make cleaning the bottoms of boats?
Q. I am considering becoming dive certified. I have a friend who said we can make a lot of money cleaning the bottoms (hulls) of boats. Is this good work? Can you get paid decent money doing it? How much exactly?
Asked by jsmith00420 - Wed Mar 24 23:05:38 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. here is and excellent site that describes in detail how to clean the bottom of a boat in the water as far as making $$$, its not a job that will allow you to get rich, but with luck and good marketing you may be able to earn a living. most divers will charge about $50.00 per boat for cleaning plus the cost of zinc replacement. the way to be sucessful is to work with marina managers and boat owners to coordinate bottom cleaning days so that you are able to clean several boats at one location on the same day. hope this helps

How much is the markup on high performance boats?
Q. I'm looking at starting a high performance boat dealership long term (Cigarette, etc.) Obviously, very few boats are sold in this market so what markup can i expect on these boats. If you have experience in this field, is there any money in this. Thanks
Asked by Erik - Thu Oct 29 00:57:35 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I spent a few years at a Fountain dealership, here are some observations. As the value of the boat increases, the margins drop. For instance, on a boat that retails for $50,000, you might have a markup of 25%. On a $500,000 boat, your margin can be as low as 6%. The costs on keeping an inventory of performance boats is much greater, most manufacturers do not offer terms, so your line of credit at the bank costs almost as much as any profit you may see. You can recover your costs in after sale service and accessories, fuel sales, berthing, etc. Most of the manufacturers will have a minimum purchase amount for there dealers, so you may have to carry $2-3 million in inventory. If you don't sell this inventory, there are no returns to… [cont.]

Why are owners of boats with outdrives advised to store the boat with the lower unit extended down?
Q. I work at a storage facility, and many or our customers have boats are fitted with an I/O (In/Out drive unit). Many of those customers want their boats stored with the lower, exposed, unit down; often this position leaves the bottom of the drive mere inches away from the floor, making the boat difficult to move when necessary. We're divided on why the unit is supposed to be left down, as no answer seems to make sense.
Asked by Mary V - Mon Oct 6 11:22:16 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For all of the earlier mentioned reasons plus the rubber bellows is relaxed instead of stretched and not exposed to the weather if stored outside. I'm sure its a nuisance for you but I for one will only store in a location where the service people agree to let me place it, lower the drive and remove the battery. I put a big sign on the tongue that says battery must be installed and drive raised before moving boat.

A. Many fishing boats do have a full complement of survival gear on board. It just depends on what the owner/captain wants to invest in. 2 extra downriggers or a liferaft and epirb. Priorities ... You makes your decisions and you lives or dies by them.

Why does the panama canal have to raise boats and lower them?
Q. The panama canal connects 2 oceans right? shouldn't the worlds oceans be leveled with each other? why does the panama canal have to raise and lower boats to get to the other side?
Asked by anthony m - Fri Aug 21 05:47:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Because the canal is not one continuous canal. There are actuually a couple of lakes between the two oceans that the canals connect with, Lake Gatun being the largest. Those lakes are above sea level thus the need to raise and lower ships via locks along the canal zone. It would have been much more difficult to cut a channel below sea level all the way across Panama. Here is a map of the canal zone:

What is the reason that navigation lights on the bow of boats is red on left and green on right?
Q. If you want to tell me where the terms "port' and 'starboard' in boats came from , i'll be amazed/ Well, after several good answers, nobody has addressed my main question. Let's go back to the very day that the color of the lights was determined. Why was red and green selected? why did the red get put on the left side. You are all answering the question based on how to use the lights, and not why the colors went where they did. So again, why red on left and green on right? Tony C got the reason for the port and starboard.
